Edinburgh, capital city of Scotland, is the seat of the Scottish Parliament. It is the second largest city in Scotland and the seventh most populous in the United Kingdom. Located in south-eastern Scotland, Edinburgh lies on the east coast of the Central Belt, along the Firth of Forth, near the North Sea. The city is one of the major historical centers of the Enlightenment. It is home to the University of Edinburgh which helps it earn the nickname, "Athens of the North". Both Old Town and New Town districts of Edinburgh were listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites in 1995. There are over 4,500 listed buildings within the city. In May 2010, it had a total of 40 conservation areas giving it the highest such ratio of any major UK city. The 2010 mid-year population estimated Edinburgh had a total resident population of 486,120. A must visit on your Brendan tour.
