Monograms Independent Vacations with Florence

Florence is the capital of the province of Florence. It is the largest city in Tuscany, with approximately 370,000 people. Florence is considered the birthplace of the Renaissance, and has been called the "Athens of the Middle Ages". From 1865 to 1870, the city was the capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The historic center of Florence attracts millions of tourists each year, and Euromonitor International was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Florence is known as the "cradle of the Renaissance" for its monuments, churches and buildings. The best-known site of Florence is The Duomo, a domed cathedral built by Filippo Brunelleschi. The nearby Campanile and the Baptistery buildings are also highlights. The dome, 600 years after its completion, is still the largest dome in the world built of brick and mortar. In 1982, the historic center of Florence was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The center of the city is contained within 14th century walls built to defend the city. At the heart of the city, Bartolomeo Ammanati's Fountain of Neptune, is a masterpiece of marble sculpture at the end of a still-functioning Roman aqueduct. The city also contains numerous museums and art galleries, such as the Uffizi Gallery and the Pitti Palace. While on your Monograms tour you will truly enjoy this beautiful city.
