Globus Tours Europe: Austria
Austria is a landlocked country bordered by the Czech Republic and Germany on the north, Hungary and Slovakia to the east, Italy to the south, and Switzerland and Liechtenstein to the west. The Alps are beautiful mountains to be seen on your Globus tour. Modern day Austria dates back to the Hapsburg dynasty and Vienna is the capital and largest city. The name, Austria, dates from 996. Austria was incorporated into the Third Reich and ceased to exist as an independent country in 1938. Some of the most prominent Nazis were native Austrians, including Adolph Hitler and Adolph Eichmann. On 15 May 1955, after talks which lasted for years and were influenced by the Cold War, Austria regained full independence by concluding the Austrian State Treaty with the Four Occupying Powers. It became a part of the European Union in 1955. Ornate palaces, imperial monuments, Mozart's music, and a wine region has made Austria a popular destination.
